Valentine’s Day and the Chinese New Year are serving as Connolly’s curatorial springboard for her AXP selections and she’s eager to highlight the work of more Asian artists. Christopher Eamon and Alaina Simone, AXP’s first two guest curators, similarly took their time selecting artists, searching for works that were vibrant and appeal to puzzlers and art lovers of all ages. All the curators have been intentional in their choosing, even considering the artists’ practice and how it relates to puzzling. They took their time selecting artists, searching for works that were vibrant, by artists of a range of ages, that would make for a puzzling time.

Curator Alaina Simone also reached out to Helina Metaferia, an artist and professor at Brown University whose process of collaging is different, yet similarly embodies the joyful mechanics of puzzles. Metaferia’s piece is titled ‘Headdress 6’, part of her ‘By Way of Revolution Series’ that she started in 2018. Typically, Metaferia’s artistic practice uses different research materials such as contemporary photographs, she puts them together in a way that’s like “an unfolding of a new story or a new history.” For artwork titled Headdress 6, Metaferia photographed a former student, who became the central image. The artist went through archives of the Black Liberation movements and collaged images taken from multiple historic protests. The result is powerful. She enjoys the fact that her art is accessible, that anyone can experience it.

Sometimes, she said, the art world can feel like a mystery. “It’s really timely actually for all the things that we’ve experienced in 2020,” Metaferia said. “It’s really appropriate to have this in the hands of everyday folk who want to remember this time period, remember where we are and where we continue to be when it comes to issues of social justice.” “In this time when galleries and institutions are having to make different changes according to social distancing — and a lot of times that includes closure — [AXP is] giving people an opportunity to experience art at home, to think about culture, to think about the role of the image and the art in social movements,” she said. “I do think this is an appropriate project for everyone and hopefully people can find time, now that we have ample time to enjoy a puzzle.

n the 1960s. Celebrating beauty, glamour and taste throughout all of his unabashedly hard chic designs, many of which were dissimilarly audacious yet always baring fanciful details, what Schlumberger proved to be most powerful among his collections and remains to pique interest with aristocrats today, is his chromatic display of the natural world, bringing form to lush botanicals, underwater fauna and sea animals that were initially inspired by his time spent at his home on the French Caribbean Island of Guadalupe.

It was here, inside his reimagined oasis that was detailed with naturalistic themes, that Schlumberger imagined some of his most illustrious pieces, oftentimes escaping his abodes to draw influence from the environment, striking an affinity for what nature’s beauty can unexpectedly be transformed into. According to Tiffany & Co., Schlumberger’s iconic Oiseau de Paradis clip, which is a mythical bird that glows with the kaleidoscopic colors of yellow beryl, amethysts, emeralds and sapphires, was one of the designers many creations that was influenced by his leisurely discoveries on the island. It too is an example, reflecting his innate ability to find something hidden in the exotism of the outdoors and inject it with an imaginative and always animative spirit. These decadently jovial creations, like the Oiseau de Paradis clip and others, including the Jellyfish brooch that was motivated by an anecdote of his friend who

was stung by a jellyfish while on vacation, enriched Tiffany & Co. with whimsy and wrote a new manifesto for the brand that was unconventionally infused with wit and curiosity. 

Even the rare gemstones that he used represented provocative scenes of nature, from abundant verdant landscapes manifested through rare Colombian emeralds to azure blue seas and electric color swatches of underwater fauna realized with aquamarines, tsavorites and sapphires. In addition, even many of the sapphires chosen, baring hues of yellow and orange, captured the sun-lamped skies above.

This season, synonymous with Schlumberger’s mesmerizing statements, Tiffany & Co. is honoring the virtuous designer with a collection of bejeweled wonders that were illustriously conceptualized by him and his drawings, including the intricately fashioned Floral Leaves Clip, Ladybug Pendant and Peapod Brooch, each which are reminiscent of the designer’s fascination with the natural world and his time in Guadalupe. Coined Tiffany & Co.’s 2021 Blue Book Collection, Colors of Nature, Palm Beach bon vivants can now seek the beauty of nature in its purest form, as seen through Schlumberger’s eyes, transformed into diamonds, colored gemstones and rock crystal. 

Here, four themes are showcased, Earth, Land, Sea and Sky, along with 70 creations that elevate the purpose of nature as it seems to be, while also bringing it a dose of avant-garde that suggests the imaginable become attainable. Painted in a technicolor symphony, the jewels are playful and majestic, while organized in precision
and conjuring Schlumberger’s above all willingness to take risks and turn them into elements of the extraordinary

Adam: You stay in such incredible shape and have such a positive view of life, it is such a breath of fresh air in these unprecedented times…how do you do it?

Laurie-Beth: That is gracious and humbling and for which I thank you too. Because of how I eat, (healthful exotic cuisine in mammoth portions albeit only once a day), I am able to eat and drink what I wish. My attitude and view of life is fueled from the vicissitudes of each day. Everything is an opportunity. (To grow, to glow or to go)! EVERYTHING!

Adam: Your ability to tell stories and articulate ideas is so next-level, have you ever thought of performing a one-woman show on stage?

“I think Condos and luxury rentals are going to be the next in-demand real estate products. Buyers are starting to be more service-oriented and the maintenance that comes with homeownership is not for everyone. Luxury rentals that include amenities and services will be a big hit soon.

Rentals are positioned to boom over the next 5 years as prices keep going up and the consumer looks for convenience more than they value long-term investing. People can take the money they would use for a down payment and to maintain a property and invest it into other wealth-building resources while they rent. There is a lower cost to live with rentals since no renovations are done by the tenant, no mortgage interest is accrued, and no wear and tear maintenance is performed by the tenant. A flat fee for living with amenities is going to be the next big thing.”

Do you write your own music?

I do write my own music.  And while melody and lyrics are my strong suit, I’ve been able to work with great collaborators, like Sam and Zak. They’ve helped  me take songs like  Stage Life and  Disappear  to completely new and elevated levels.   

Speaking to a year of many changes, how do you think the music industry can improve in this time of COVID19?

I’m really glad you’re asking about this. As much as I love making music, the business of music can be really difficult. And right now in the pandemic, the few artists who were actually able to make a living off touring are of course not able to do so.   I think the music industry could do a much better job of boosting independent, talented artists who may not have the perfect marketing package, but I frankly don’t see anyone trying to do anything like that. I come from DIY music culture, and since I’m not seeing it being done, I’m doing it myself.

I’m in the process of building a platform called  Wavculture that will address what is most immediately needed during the pandemic; a simple directory of live-streamed concerts organized by date and genre.  Wavculture will help independent musicians like me get their music heard, and make it easy for fans to find musical gems among all the noise – beyond what’s already popular. From there, I’d like to organize my own super interactive concert live streams featuring other artists.  

What are your future goals and hopes for 2021? 

I plan to release my third album with Sam, “Out of a Dream” LP, and launch Wavculture, the concert Livestream directory I mentioned.    I’m also working on and hoping that Sam’s final solo album will be properly released. One of the things that really hurt Sam before he passed was the difficulty in making a living off of music despite his incredible gift; because of this, I will always fight for the musical cream to rise to the top in a sustainable way for artists in 2021 and beyond.

Hickey has some advice to offer investors who are feeling nervous during the Pandemic. “Keep a diversified portfolio including finding assets that have low correlations (beta) to each other given the only thing that is certain about the future is uncertainty. It is “OK” to miss some good deals if you ideally also miss the bad ones. Work with experts and specialized investment teams who have a deep understanding and economic alignment of interest with you and a strong correlation in how they and you are investing.”
