Paul Teutul Sr – Metropolitan Magazine

maximios Blog

BY ADAM KLUGER

Paul, how are you and your family handling the pandemic?

It has been pretty difficult for all of us. I think the hardest thing is I did not get to see my grandkids for a few months. I just saw them for the first time this week and it was great!

Are you working on any cool new bikes?

We just completed a really cool bobber style for a law firm in Arkansas. We did a killer chopper for ABC building supply. The ABC bike will be airing on August 3rd, at 9 pm, on the Discovery channel. You don’t want to miss this one.

Do you find yourself riding more during the pandemic?

We did get to ride a lot more. Me and Joan ride every chance we get. It is still never enough for me.

How are you staying in shape? I work out 4 days a week. I don’t go heavy like I used to, I do lighter weight and more reps. I think it is all about consistency. As for diet, I struggle every day to keep weight on. I drink “weight gain” and eat twice what most people would ever eat. It makes Joan crazy that I can eat so much and never gain weight. I am really fortunate, I just got my blood work back and it

on the upcoming American Chopper episode was close to perfect.

Big fans of American Chopper– what kind of feedback do you get from fans on why they love the show?

We really have great fans all over the world. Some people are all about bikes and how they are built, others can relate to the family dynamics. I think that I have really always been a blue-collar guy that wound up on a television show and for better or worse I was just myself. The number one comment we get at Orange County Choppers is how much people identify with the everyday struggles that come with being in business, and how hard it can be to work with family.

American Chopper is fascinating on a number of levels– the artistic process, the camaraderie, the father-son family dynamic, the small business aspect, client and fan interaction…what are some of the biggest takeaways for you on why the show has such resonance for so many people?

The art and work that goes into every bike is pretty cool to watch whether you are a rider or not. Orange County Choppers has been fortunate enough to have some of the greatest talent in the world working here. I also think it was because it was really just everyday life. Anyone who knows me, knows I am not a scripted guy or an actor. Even if I was asked to do a script I could never remember the lines.

A lot is made about the relationship between you and your sons- there really has never been a reality show that has gone into these types of father-son relationships so honestly… what have you learned about your sons and yourself over the course of American Chopper? If your sons were to read this article in the future- what would you want them each to know?

Dr. Jennifer Walden – Metropolitan Magazine

maximios Blog

Dr. Walden, you describe yourself as a Texan and a New Yorker. Besides being able to rock a cowboy hat with the best of them, how did you develop this dual identity?

Yes, I am a proud Texan and New Yorker! Since completing my residency at the University of Texas and training at the world-renowned Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, I am glad to be able to call both places my ‘home’. I live in my hometown of Austin, Texas with my twin boys, Houston and Rex and our manny. The boys were born in NYC and love to spend time with me here when I am at my NYC practice. As the saying goes, once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker!

So then this is a return to NYC for you with Skintology Medspa on East 57th between 3rd/ Lexington?

It sure is, I knew the day would come that I would return to NYC in some capacity, and with my boys growing older, the opportunity came at the perfect time. I own and operate my fully accredited operating suite in Austin where I do all my major plastic surgery operative cases. My team and I are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of patient safety. I also have 2 fully equipped Medical Spas in Austin and a team of outstanding aestheticians and nurse practitioners that allow me to grow the nonsurgical aspects of my practice. Owning Skintology Medspa in Midtown Manhattan allows me to provide state-of-the-art services for my patients in NYC as well as Texas, with procedures performed by my amazing providers here such as Botox and dermal fillers, noninvasive vaginal rejuvenation, body contouring such as CoolSculpting, laser and light- based anti-aging facial treatments, Ultherapy and more. I also personally do local anesthesia based cosmetic surgical procedures like thread lifts and blepharoplasty (eyelid lifts) when I am here in New York.

That’s amazing. Can you tell us about your vision for Skintology MedSpa? What sets it apart from competitors

My vision for Skintology is to expand on some of the newer beauty and sexual wellness services and to educate my patients on what can help them achieve their goals. Nowadays people are very much interested in noninvasive procedures with minimal downtime, and I like to offer the newest and best technology to help them get where they’d like to be. Having such a functional facility allows me to build my team of talented and skilled physicians, nurses, medical aestheticians, and beauty therapists. I have a fantastic local medical director and restorative health expert, Dr. Mary-Laura Klesaris who can advise patients on internal and hormonal health, as well as the staff who can provide elite cosmetic services.

Dr. Jennifer, as you just mentioned, the on- going trend in plastic surgery has been an increase in minimally invasive/noninvasive aesthetic medicine and surgery. Why is that? What are some of the more popular procedures requested?

Exactly, with surgery, there is considerable downtime, so I have noticed a surge in patients interested in procedures with minimal downtime such as radiofrequency skin tightening with NuEra Tight or Big D Wave to effectively treat our male patients for Erectile Dysfunction or Peyronie’s Disease. Another workhorse of my practice is our noninvasive Body Sculpting equipment. With CoolSculpting we are able to freeze unwanted stubborn fat for male and female patients and have witnessed amazing results from as little as two treatments. The nonsurgical aspect makes achieving cosmetic goals easier for patients who are nervous or unable to undergo surgery for medical reasons. SculpSure also helps destroy local areas of fat pockets and we use that often as well. Every day we see patients who would like to tweak their appearance and my wonderful team of injectors in both Austin and NYC administer neurotoxins such as Botox and Dysport, and Hyaluronic Acid Fillers such as Restlyane, Vollure, Volbella, and Juvederm.

That’s really a full suite of services. For prospective Skintology MedSpa patients, can you speak a little bit more on the latest innovations in injectables, body sculpting, IV hydration therapy, and some of the other surgical procedures you offer your clientele?

The medspa industry is in a constant stage of innovation, with an amazing variety of injectables available to treat a multitude of concerns. From Botox or Jeuveau to smooth facial lines and wrinkles, to Sculptra Buttock Augmentation to build volume and reduce cellulite or even Penile Enlargement with hyaluronic acid fillers by our board-certified urologist, we can address issues that prospective patients might dream of, but not have ever heard of or had the information available to them. As I mentioned with Coolsculpting, we are able to apply an applicator to the targeted area and freeze the fat cells to reveal a more sculpted and smooth shape. Sometimes that is all it takes to help someone build their confidence and I love that we can help the patients in that way. IV hydration therapy or simply B12 injections can help you feel better from the inside out, while infusing your body with vitamins to optimize hormones and feel better overall. We have a broad variety of medical-grade supplements available which can be prescribed by our bioidentical hormonal expert to patients who are feeling lethargic or lacking libido or feeling anxious. I am most comfortable in the operating room. I enjoy helping my patients’ achieve their cosmetic goals whether that be a mommy makeover after childbirth, a facelift to turn back the years and lift and tighten the face, as well as life-changing genital aesthetic surgeries such as labiaplasty which reduces the labia minora in women.

These sexual wellness solutions you offer are really amazing. Not a lot of other plastic surgeons seem to be able to address this important area of patient health and well- being.

Sexual wellness is an important aspect of a patients’ overall health and we can help with concerns such as urinary incontinence with our Votiva RF Vaginal Rejuvenation device to target and tighten both the internal and external changes that occur with the vagina and vulva after childbirth and menopause. This treatment can improve a woman’s libido and her confidence. We offer both the O-Shot and P-Shot, which are platelet-rich plasma procedures. The O-Shot helps with vaginal dryness and tightness in women and the P-Shot for men rejuvenates the penis and increases sensation. I like to think outside of the box and stay on the cutting edge of the latest studies and trends. Last year, I was the first physician’s office in NYC to offer the “Big D Wave” noninvasive ED treatment to our male patients in Manhattan. We also are happy to have Dr. Mary- Laura Klesaris who performs bioidentical hormone replacement therapy by both implanted pellets and by pills which go hand in hand with sexual wellness. We also have Dr. Lanna Cheuck on board with the Skintology MedSpa team on Mondays! Dr. Cheuck is a board-certified urologist who can help with hormonal evaluation, assessing and treating ED and other sexual wellness issues. She also offers injectable treatments to both women and men.

TAMSEN FADAL Journalist, Advocate, Warrior – Metropolitan Magazine

maximios Blog

Tamsen at her appartement in NYC

Change your hair color. Change your name. Invest in a new wardrobe. These were only some of the comments Tamsen Fadal endured when she began her career in broadcast journalism.

“When I was younger, a producer said I needed to look more like the girl next door,” she says. “I’m Lebanese with dark hair and dark eyes, and this was a time when the business was very cookie-cutter.”

There was a mold for what female news anchors were “supposed to” look like and at the time, Fadal did not fit the prototype. She struggled with the thought for years, sometimes conforming and uncomfortably adjusting, fearing failure if she did not make those changes for everybody else. Valid concerns, but as the industry and the world changed over the years, Fadal’s confidence grew, as did her level of success. And while she’s not exactly the “girl next door,” she is now the anchor of PIX11 News and an eight-time Emmy award-winner. For young women looking to enter the field, Fadal stresses the importance of staying true to who you are.

“I didn’t do that for a very long time and I regret it,” she says. “I probably spent ten years trying to be somebody else.”

Before that, though, Fadal was driven by a passion for storytelling beginning at a young age. She knew who and what she wanted to be. “When I was a little kid, I would sit my parents down in the garage and make them listen to my newscast,” she says. “I always loved telling stories.”

Tamsen at the PIX 11 News station

Over time and after studying broadcast journalism in college, Fadal realized that storytelling was the way she could give voice to the voiceless. And in 2002, working out of a local Philadelphia CBS affiliate, Fadal crossed the Atlantic to embed with Air Force troops in Afghanistan during the height of Operation Enduring Freedom. What marked only two weeks in her career turned out to be the most influential in dictating what types of stories she wanted to share with the world.  The experience left her with a different perspective on just about everything.

“We heard so many stories about how the Taliban had taken over [Kandahar] and was operating in the shadows, so we had a military escort with us the whole time,” says Fadal. “It was really a life-altering experience for me because I had never seen anything like that. I had obviously never seen war.”

Though her time in the Middle East was brief, Fadal points to the experiences that left a lasting impression on her: watching soldiers meet their newborns over video chat, discussions with women who had left children at home to go serve their country, and most notably, her trips in and around the streets of Kandahar and Kabul.

“I saw up close how the people of [Afghanistan] were living—could see how frightened the women were,” she says. “I wanted to empower those women and give a voice to the women who didn’t feel like they had one. It was just so hard to see: women who were afraid to live.”

Upon her return and a subsequent move to New York, women’s empowerment became a driving force behind her career. She wanted to see women standing up for what they believed in, especially in regards to education and major life decisions.

In the aftermath of an embarrassing and public divorce, Fadal became the same kind of woman she had long championed for. Blogging for the Huffington Post, she emerged from the heartbreak as a post-marriage icon for women struggling with similar and universally female experiences. She would later go on to publish her latest book, The New Single, a manifesto for all women going through a big life change.

I didn’t intend to write another book, but I found out I had a lot to say

“I didn’t intend to write another book, but I found out I had a lot to say,” say says. “I had a voice and I knew a lot of women who were going through the same thing.”

On air, her segment ChangeMakers highlights women in the community who are making a difference. “You don’t have to be famous to make a difference,” says Fadal. “What you need is a passion and the desire to stand up for what you believe in. That’s what I try to do, good or bad.”

One of those passions is advocating for breast cancer awareness. At the forefront of this advocacy is the memory of her mother, who passed away from breast cancer after a six-year battle when Fadal was twenty. It was a time when people did not publicly discuss women’s health care issues, and breast cancer awareness had nowhere near the support it has today.

“I was young and as soon as I realized I had a voice, [breast cancer awareness] became something I was very passionate about.”

Fadal spent years working with various organizations to help women gain access to affordable resources, mammograms, and check-ups. It was a passion with deep personal roots.

“My mother was my best friend and I watched her struggle through a horrifying disease,” she says. “While we wait for a cure, I feel like this is the one way I can make a difference.”

At the heart of journalism is the desire to tell the stories that matter—a desire to make a difference with words. Privileged with a platform and an audience, Fadal uses her public voice everyday to speak up for causes that are meaningful. Whether she is championing women’s rights, traipsing across Afghan deserts or New York concrete, or advocating for breast cancer awareness, one thing is certain: Tamsen Fadal is the definition of a warrior.

Hotel de la Ville & La Villa – Metropolitan Magazine

maximios Blog

Having traveled the world and spent many days in my ancestral homeland, Italy, it is a rare treat to find a place that I would love to call home. The city of Monza, a superb suburb of Milan, is one such destination. And its finest hotel, Hotel de la Ville & La Villa is the hotel (house) where I would love to live!

This impeccably designed property, with its English club-like atmosphere (woods, antiques, drapery, leathers, wall clocks and so much more) is a step back to another time; a gentler, more genteel time where one can truly experience il dolce fare niente (the sweetness of doing nothing).

From owner to bartender, the entire staff at Hotel de la Ville & La Villa was accommodating, knowledgeable, professional and above all else, friendly. Mr. Tany Nardi, co-owner with his brother Luigi and Director General of the hotel, showered us with his love for Monza and Italy and its food and culture. This desire to showcase the passion they have for their home permeated through everything—from the beautiful room and its furnishings to the most delicious meal at their restaurant, the Derby Grill.

Hotel de la Ville, a luxury four-star accommodation with views over the Monza Villa Reale, is a magnificent location and is ideal for the requirements of both work and pleasure. In this strategic location, the Hotel de la Ville and its annex, La Villa, are surrounded by the clean air of the Reggia Savoia Park and are approximately 9 miles from Milan Central Station and about 13 miles from the Fiera Milano Rho.

The hotel is inspired by the Palazzo Reale, the summer residence of the Savoy family, which the hotel overlooks. The Nardi family, with their impeccable taste, transformed each of the splendid rooms and suites of the hotel and its beautiful annex, La Villa, in tribute to the style of the men and women who have made Italian history.

With its 70 rooms,  including five junior suites and three suites, the hotel is the perfect size —not  too small to be cloyingly intimate and not too large to be informal. This ethos shines through, as you are welcomed by the Italian staff with warm smiles and a helping hand.

The real treat, beyond the soft bed and luxurious amenities, is the fine restaurant, the Derby Grill. Helmed by fellow southern Italian (interesting fact: the chef actually knows where my grandmother was born), Fabio Silva, the restaurant was a treat and helped me discover why northern Italian cooking is as impressive as southern. One of the most famous restaurants in the Lombardy region, the Derby Grill is a culinary tribute to Italian tradition, a fascinating journey through the regions of Italy and offers an exceptional wine list. The menu, art collections and extraordinary skill in both kitchen and dining room makes it the ideal location for a romantic dinner, an exclusive business lunch or to celebrate an important occasion. Next door, the elegant American Bar is ideal for any type of event and social gathering – a piece of New York in the heart of Monza.

Whether there for business or for pleasure (be sure to stop by the Villa Reale just next to the hotel; it is a real treat!), the Hotel de la Villa & La Villa and Monza itself will delight. Stop by for more than a day and you’ll understand why I would not hesitate to call this place home.

Anat Fritz – Metropolitan Magazine

maximios Blog

It’s truly amazing that you have been able to develop so many distinctive products and collections under the Anat Fritz brand.
In terms of designing, I just know exactly what I want and I already see the finished product in front of me, and then I work backward so to speak and ask myself what “does it require?”, until I can finally hold the finished product in my hands. That pretty much describes my design process. Before I moved to New York I had my own fashion brand, as well as a studio for creative consultancy. I just love to create. I am a perfectionist and proportion fanatic and it is really hard to please me aesthetically. Of course, the few designers that I adore will have what I love, but honestly, I like to wear something beautiful with my own name written on the –label – that  is much more satisfying to me.

 Tell us about yourself?
In addition to my fashion and fragrance lines (anatfritz.com), I also oversee all aspects of my art direction, my branding, styling, and design. I direct all my shoots, look books and campaigns myself and do visual consulting and collections for other brands. I also do a significant amount of free-lance work consulting on creative direction and exploring new brand partnerships. Presently, I am in development on a wonderful anti-aging face cream, unlike anything on the market.

Photography by Willy Somma

How did you get started in perfume?
I am always on the search for that perfect thing. If I cannot find it somewhere, I sit down and make it. I was always looking for the perfect scent to accompany my daily life. Something that leaves a trace of me in the atmosphere. A scent with depth, personality and impact – but on a subtle level. A memorable, but refined scent.. I have very high standards with everything I do.

Sexiness comes from inside whatever your age.

What is your philosophy on scent?
The only purpose a perfume has is to flatter, expose, enhance one´s personality and make the wearer´s individuality visible. I cannot understand how people can walk in a cloud of these commercial synthetic celebrity scents, that smell the same on every person —and people say “wait, are you wearing Fahrenheit? Or is that Daisy by Marc Jacobs? I recognize it!” Those perfumes function like a blanket that covers your personality.

What are your influences?
My influences stem clearly from the late ’70s. Just think Annie Hall! The proportions, the shapes, the combinations. I am a big fan of functionality paired with effortless chic.  I like classy, timeless things in every category. Feminine but not overly vampy, still a bit held back so that there always remains a part that needs to be discovered. Over the years I have built “the perfect wardrobe.” Once it makes it into the archives, it will blend and mix with every other piece I have. I can just grab anything and it will be a perfect match all together. I rarely spend more than five minutes in front of my closet. I love to be inspiring eye candy to people I meet and I value when others make an effort with the same. Isn´t it so much nicer to study a woman sitting across from you in a cafe and finding inspiration in her outward appearance and to possibly get a glimpse of her personality and maybe character?

Sounds like you would make an excellent stylist.
For the right client, I would. As long as I am I given the creative freedom I require.

Final thoughts?
I like to create beautiful things and inspire people. If it comes to an idea or vision of a naked woman on a horse, I like to be that woman. Sexiness comes from inside whatever your age. I do yoga and exercise and I’m a proponent of healthy food. The ultimate for me is raw, unprocessed food. In fact, I also have a book out with raw food recipes that has been translated into a few languages. I get great satisfaction in helping other women rediscover their feminine power and joy of life.
