Chazz Palminteri – Metropolitan Magazine

A Bronx Tale

By Adam Kluger and Melissa Clark | Photos by Matt Licari | Design by Heidi North

Chazz Palminteri walked right into the restaurant like he owned the joint. That’s because he does.

Chazz Palminteri Italian Restaurant. Old School elegance. Fine dining (30 West 46th St.). Right in the heart of Broadway’s theater district.

Metropolitan magazine boss/publisher Chase Backer and his crew were summoned for a quick sit-down between Palminteri’s matinee and evening performances of A Bronx Tale: The Musical.

Q: How excited are you to see A Bronx Tale presented as a Broadway musical?

Chazz: “It’s very exciting. This is a story that’s been going on now for 30 years. There was the one-man show I wrote in 1988. I performed it in 1989 in L.A. and then in New York. And then I brought it back to Broadway in 2008 and I performed it again. Now, I brought it back as a musical. It’s been an incredible gift, and it’s always exciting to see a brand new incarnation.”

Q: How important has your friendship with the musical’s director, Robert De Niro, a two-time Oscar winner, been in helping you bring new life to A Bronx Tale, first in Hollywood and now Broadway?

Chazz: “I also wrote the film in 1988 and showcased it in 1989, it was the hottest property at the time. Everybody wanted it — but buyers wanted to put a star in the role. I was very fortunate to meet Robert De Niro, he saw the show, loved it, and he wanted to direct it.

“He suggested I play Sonny and write it; Bob made the movie happen … we’re just good friends. He’s a great artist, and he’s really the one who made A Bronx Tale the movie happen. If it wasn’t for Bob, I don’t know what would have happened.”

Q: Tell us about Chazz Palminteri Italian Restaurant?

Chazz: “It’s one of the best restaurants in Manhattan. The food is great. The service is incredible. The ambiance is great. It’s a great place to eat. The food is really good. I would rather make a little less but serve the highest quality because the    way people come back to a restaurant is if it’s really good. There’s too many great restaurants. If the food isn’t great or the service isn’t great, I mean it’s my name. It’s my restaurant. People come once for me. And if it’s not good they’re not coming back.”

First Long Island Investors – Metropolitan Magazine

maximios Blog

For more than 35 years, high net worth individuals, families, and select institutions on Long Island and beyond have gained the respect and trust from First Long Island Investors’ unique perspective on wealth. It’s a confidence that comes from having a team of advisors committed to the values set by Robert D. Rosenthal, Chairman, CEO, and CIO, and Ralph F. Palleschi, President and COO, when they founded the firm in 1983.

Robert D. Rosenthal said, “It all began with the experience and lessons learned from the Entenmann’s bakery business. The Entenmann family had put all of their wealth into the bakery. I was concerned that they needed some diversification so, given my background as both a lawyer and an accountant, I thought going public would be a way for them to diversify. The successful public offering in May of 1976 created liquidity for the Entenmann family which we were then responsible to help invest and that is where the concept of investing came in. From that, Ralph (who had been the lead auditor with KPMG on the IPO) joined me a few years thereafter and we were responsible for helping to manage the Entenmann family fortune while still running the bakery. When we ultimately sold the bakery to the Warner-Lambert Company in 1978 it created additional liquidity for the family, which they entrusted to Ralph and me.”

Together the two managed the Entenmann family wealth while attending to a wide variety of services beyond investing, including multigenerational planning, estate planning, tax advisory, and philanthropic planning. This is when the concept of First Long Island Investors came together. They saw that other Long Island families could be well-served with a wealth/ investment manager who understands all the facets of wealth without the need to travel to New York City.

“The expertise we gained made us attractive to similar clients— business owners, entrepreneurs, and wealthy families,” says Palleschi. “We became well-known for delivering on our core principles of trust, service, and performance.”

A Client-Centric Approach Exemplary service and a particular approach to asset allocation are at the core of First Long Island Investors’ success.

“We begin with an in-depth analysis of a client’s holdings and an understanding of his or her long-term goals. We then build a customized asset allocation recommendation that takes into consideration risk tolerance, liquidity needs, current income needs, and time horizon,” Rosenthal explains.

“From there, we make specific strategic recommendations,” Palleschi continues.

One critical differentiator for First Long Island Investors is that the firm’s senior management invests their own assets side by side with their clients.

“When we say we understand our clients’ goals, it’s because we share them ourselves,” Rosenthal says. “At First Long Island Investors, we put our money where our advice is. We look for quality in any company, or any piece of real estate that we would invest in for ourselves and our clients. I want to emphasize that we will never put a client in an investment that we are not personally invested in.”

Of course, communication and transparency are also paramount to the firm’s commitment to service excellence. The team takes service seriously, building long-lasting relationships, scheduling regular reviews of all clients’ portfolios and recommending adjustments as warranted. Calls are returned quickly, and the firm has even introduced a wealth management hotline through which clients can reach a senior team member after hours or on weekends.

Edward Palleschi, Senior Vice President, Wealth Management shared that since he joined First Long Island Investors over 15 years ago it has been ingrained in him to always put your clients first. “Bob and Ralph have created a culture to always service all your clients very well. They have taught the entire team that if you get a phone call from somebody you should return that phone call as soon as you can. It is imperative to develop a professional relationship with each client. So, the concept of trust… the concept of professionalism… no matter what the task…you should always try to do that as best you can and as quickly and efficiently as you can.”

Today the Entenmann families are still clients and their multiple generations count on the entire team at First Long Island Investors to provide them with sound advice and guidance on all of their wealth management needs but they are a modest piece of the overall business. Over 200 families and individuals across the tristate area and beyond have come to rely on the investment philosophy and wealth management services of First Long Island Investors.

According to Philip Malakoff, Senior Vice President, Wealth Management and Director of Research a customized, prudent asset allocation is one of the main reasons clients come to and stay with First Long Island Investors. “We pride ourselves in customizing an asset allocation for each client based upon their particular circumstances and nobody is treated in a cookie-cutter way. We review each and every client’s asset allocation on a quarterly basis where an investment committee of nine people sits in a room and discusses what is right for each client given their individual situation and goals as well as the macro-economic and market factors at hand. That high touch service philosophy is critically important in terms of communicating with clients and making sure that we understand their needs and their goals, while keeping them up to date on performance and our thinking. All of this is reflected in their customized asset allocation.”

As for the vision for the future of First Long Island Investors, Rosenthal says the key ingredients to future success are staying true to long-held ideals and to following a recipe that stresses investing in quality companies, the importance of frequent client communication, and proper asset allocation while adjusting to the times and making sure that client goals and immediate needs are met – in person, over the phone, online, etc.

“The future of the company is based on values and lessons from the past. We have a very high service ethic. The asset allocation that we talked about has been critically important to make sure that our clients do not make emotional decisions in their long-term investments –it is quite typical to become afraid when there is volatility but if you have the right asset allocation, which we put together for each client, the tendency to make emotional mistakes is reduced significantly and that leads to the ability for our clients to compound their wealth for long periods of time. That is how they maintain and grow their wealth above the rate of inflation and after taxes are paid.”

Melania Trump – Metropolitan Magazine

maximios Blog

The Will to Self

One would be remiss to confine Melania Trump to the titles she holds: Supermodel, mother, and First Lady. Her appeal is greater than all of that. She is the sum total of her entire biography. Immigrant. Artist. Fashion Icon– and yes, feminist.

Born in the former socialist state of Slovenia, then a part of communist Yugoslavia, Melania Knavs experienced first-hand the stifling consequences of practiced socialism, created by Tito’s rapacious demand for power. Yet, Melania Knavs was determined to create a life on her own terms.

At an early age, Melania demonstrated an aptitude for modeling. Contrary to popular belief, a pretty face isn’t enough for a successful career in modeling, it requires strenuous effort, determined perseverance, and nuanced business acumen. Melania earned her international modeling contract; it wasn’t given to her like a government hand-out. For many an aspiring model, that achievement alone would have been enough. Ascending to the most prestigious catwalks of Milan, Paris, London, and New York, while representing the world’s premier designers and artists. To Melania, however, the runway wasn’t a platform, but a stairway.

It was through modeling that she met her future husband and America’s 45th President. She would also become an American citizen and ultimately the First Lady of The United States of America. First Ladies are often defined by their husbands. Seen by many in gendered terms as complementary and compliant, standing by their man without a will of their own. Melania shatters that mold. She defines her husband and defies expectations in every way. Her detractors say she can be aloof. To her admirers, she is mysterious, chic, and something like royalty – a modern Grace Kelly. As our First Lady, Melania has shown a quiet strength and independent spirit while rejecting or refusing to tolerate the suffocating strictures that our culture places on one of the last acceptable gendered stereotypes. That strength of will is precisely why she has become and will remain, such an iconoclast. As an immigrant, none of our ingrained cultural expectations have been imprinted on her mind. She has always seen other First Ladies from without – not within. And as a result, Melania is free to define and refine her role as she sees fit.

Some Americans, especially those who worship the state, do not like anyone with an independent spirit who thinks for themselves. However, whatever point of view one chooses to view this most exotic member of the White House’s private residence from, her most enduring legacy may ultimately be as the ideal example of the American dream.

She is the living proof of the promises of our nation.

Donald Trump respects Melania. Deeply. In a way that has rarely, if ever, been seen elsewhere in his personal or professional life as President. It is this respect for her strength that allows Melania to accept the position of First Lady on her terms. Not America’s. Not her husband’s. Hers. And that kind of autonomy isn’t something that happens often in any White House.

A modern-day First Lady with a strength of will that deserves the respect of our entire nation.

Maybe someday she’ll get it.
Either way, she will be who she is, NOT what we want her to be.

Dale Noelle

CEO of TRUE Model Management

By Carlos Lacayo | Photos by Chris Carroll

Styling by Rachel D’Ruan | Produced by Carlos Lacayo

Dale Noelle is the Founder and CEO of TRUE Model Management. For twenty years, she was a successful model, working with some of the most prominent fashion houses and popular brands like Oscar de la Renta, Oleg Cassini, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger and Nicole Miller. Over the years, Dale cultivated a robust network among the fashion elite and was regularly asked for referrals and advice.

Shortly after becoming pregnant, Dale was diagnosed with cancer and her modeling career came to an abrupt halt. Despite her diagnosis and the anticipated challenges, she refused to let those sudden changes and obstacles define her future. She was confident in her skills and connections and immediately made the move from model to model manager. This was the beginning of TRUE Model Management.

Headquartered in New York City with affiliates in Los Angeles and Hong Kong, TRUE continues to grow exponentially and actively recruits new models every day, worldwide. TRUE is known for providing models for some of the most in influential names in the industry such as Calvin Klein, DKNY, GAP, Ralph Lauren, Milly, Zac Posen, Alexander Wang, Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger and Victoria’s Secret. Dale’s passions for networking, modeling, philanthropy and empowering others continue to remain at the core of TRUE.

From becoming a successful female entrepreneur to giving back and empowering others, Dale Noelle tells 25A Magazine how she manages to overcome obstacles and balance all of her endeavors

and time.

Starting a business can be quite overwhelming and intimidating, let alone during pregnancy and amidst a diagnosis of cancer. Did you have a mentor, to help you through this process?

I did not have a mentor to guide me specifically for TRUE Model Management, but however, my grandmother and my father were my life’s mentors. From a very early age, they instilled a strong work ethic in me and always focused on the importance of supporting others. These lessons, combined with first-hand practical experience as a previous business owner and model, set me up to be successful in pursuing my dreams.

Can you speak about your experience as a female business owner? What would you say is the greatest challenge?

My experiences as a female business person in the modeling industry have all been very positive. However, when I worked and owned businesses in other industries, I needed to work extra hard to prove myself, earn respect for being smart and get men to look me in the eyes.

TRUE was inspired by your passion for modeling and for networking and connecting with others. What advice do you have for someone interested in turning his/her passion into a business?

My advice for others is to follow your heart, do your homework before starting your business and write a detailed plan. It is important to align yourself with honest business associates and intelligent, loyal employees. Knowledge of business laws, at least the basics in accounting and computer programming/coding are helpful to know. To be successful as a businessperson you need to be aggressive and bold, while being kind and compassionate. Take calculated risks, be optimistic, resilient and persistent. Lastly, I’d recommend saving money and resting up for the ride!

What causes do you support and how does this compassion lend itself to your professional work?

I strongly believe in giving back to communities and empowering others to further enrich the world. Philanthropy has always been very important to me personally and professionally, which is why I try to stay actively involved in many causes close to my heart. For the events that I host, I like to incorporate a donation and/or charity component. As a cancer survivor, I fully realize the importance of funding foundations and charities and the impact these philanthropic organizations have on the lives of others.

Currently, I’m on the boards of the Federal Enforcement Homeland Security Foundation (FEHSF), TedX Fulton Street, DRAM Conferences and the Women and Fashion FilmFest. I regularly organize and participate in charity events and am on benefit committees for organizations such as: Fred Hutchinson/University of Washington’s Cancer Research, The Center For Discovery, K.I.D.S/Fashion Delivers, Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, Women Helping Women, to name a few.

Causes close to my heart include the following: Cancer, Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy and Alzheimer’s Research, Empowering Women, Education, eradicating Human Trafficking, Homeland Security, Manufacturing in America, Assisting the impoverished and more.

What makes you feel most empowered and how do you hope to empower others?

I feel the most empowered and energized when I’m helping others to attain their dreams and improve their lives. I believe in the power of positivity and by helping to better the lives of others you are bettering your own, as well as the world. TRUE Model Management is an extension of my commitment to help others make their dreams a reality. At TRUE, we help our models to realize and pursue their dreams related to the industry and otherwise. I regularly participate and partner with organizations that share my desire to empower others, especially women. Some of the organizations include, Women’s Entrepreneur Day, the Women and Fashion Film Fest, Women Helping Women, INC.’s Women’s Summit and Women’s Leadership Live.

Cindy Guyer

Restauranteur & Romance Queen

If Cindy Guyer looks familiar when you walk into her Upper West Side restaurant/wine bar, Guyer’s, it’s because she has appeared on the covers of over 400 romance novels. A model and actress, she has appeared in numerous national commercials for products like Prell shampoo, plus movies and television shows, in addition to being the queen of romance novel covers. Guyer is sort of the female Fabio, with whom she has shared many book covers.

When we spoke to her on a recent Friday afternoon, Guyer was about to head to the restaurant, where she wears many hats. “I do everything,” she says. “I’m very hands-on.” One night she’ll tend bar, another night she’ll do the cooking. “I’m little overworked, but that’s OK,” she laughs. “Right now, I’m on my way over there, my cook will get there around 3 o’clock, and I’ll start to bartend, and at 7 o’clock I’ll turn the bar over to my bartender and then just be the hostess.”

But it turns out that wearing many hats has been the hallmark of this entrepreneur’s varied career, starting at age 15, when the legendary modeling agency founder Wilhelmina scouted her at a Connecticut restaurant where Guyer was lunching with her parents. At 16, Guyer was signed by Eileen Ford, and became the face for the young-adult Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys novels. The agency that cast the books threw a corset on Guyer one day and put her on a romance novel as a “little Lolita,” and she graduated from kid lit to romance novels. “I guess I did such a good job, they just kept using me.” She continued her education, and also studied acting, worked on soap operas, and, she says, just got very lucky early on, and through hard work, wound up having a twenty-year career doing book covers. She still does book shoots. “I did one last month,” Guyer says.
She takes care of herself, and realizes that she is very lucky to still look good. Yes, she says, the niche she fell into as romance novel cover-girl is a lot of fun, and she loves the people in the industry. “We have these big romance conventions, and I’m friends with a lot of the authors,” Guyer says. She recently went to a convention in Las Vegas for the magazine The Romantic Times, run by her friend, Kathryn Falk. “I call her my godmother. She’s so good to me. Both of my parents passed away, so her and her husband have always known my family, and they always look after me. She’s just great.”

Guyer produced and hosted the series Mr. Romance, a breakout show for Oprah’s Oxygen Network, which featured Fabio and Kiss rocker Gene Simmons. She also wrote the concept and starred in the Lifetime series The Perfect Nanny.

So how did Guyer end up in the restaurant business? “I think actors are natural-born entertainers,” she says. “We love people, we like to entertain. We sit around on movie sets waiting, so we’re used to just hanging out with other people, so I think certain actors are just good at hosting. They know how to handle people. I understand people. I love it.”

The food she describes as French-American, “but it’s actually very continental, because I do have my grandmother’s fabulous meatballs on the menu.” Weekend brunch skews southern, with grits and homemade biscuits. She loves the kale salad, which she created. “It keeps me skinny, I call it the model salad.” All of the salads are healthy, she says, and there are fabulous flatbread French pizzas, which are also “not that fattening.” There are daily fish and pasta specials. “It’s very homemade food; homemade, gourmet, fun food.”

With restaurants, there’s always a lot of drama…

She hopes Guyer’s will become a neighborhood staple; she has a ten-year lease, and just added weekend brunch and outdoor seating. She hopes to paper the powder room with her book covers. She had previously run a wine bar in the same space, with several partners, a situation she found less than ideal. “This time, I decided I would be the only partner,” she says. “I have no investors, and I’m doing this all on my own.” Partners, Guyer has decided, are only for dancing and for loving. “When it comes to money and different ideas on how to run a company, it gets tricky.” She admits that by doing it on her own, she is overworked, but feels that the rewards will be worth it.

Even with working 7-day weeks, Guyer is still planning new projects; along with Romantic Times editor Falk, she’s cooking up a series of novels set at the restaurant. “With restaurants, there’s always a lot of drama, especially with the staff. And if you’ve ever watched the Bravo show with Lisa Vanderpump, there’s always drama when you’ve got a bunch of kids around. Instead of having a reality television show, we’re going to have books.”

Balvanera – Metropolitan Magazine

maximios Blog

Located on the Lower East Side of New York City on Stanton Street sits Balvanera, an Argentine steakhouse named after a barrio in Buenos Aires, where the creative types of the city come to mingle. The service here is attitude-free, in a neighborhood where you’ll often encounter a pretentious wait staff. It’s a cozy spot, with its rustic dining room featuring adapted elements of Spanish and Italian cooking, filled with a downtown crowd.

The menu strays from straight-up Argentine cuisine, although there are expertly grilled meats, traditional flaky empanadas, house-made chorizo and a chimichurri sauce that transports you to Buenos Aires. While, obviously, meats are the highlight here, including their dry-aged, grilled bone-in rib eye, the restaurant is not just about steak, and vegetarians and pescatarians will enjoy many facets of the menu. including fresh burrata with peaches and almonds, octopus and pasta. There is gnocchi special on the 29th day of each month, an Argentine tradition where everyone typically eats pasta on that specific day of the month.

The restaurant is the first project of Argentine Chef Fernando Navas (with stints at El Bulli and Nobu) representing the cuisine and spirit of Buenos Aires. The wine list is curated in collaboration with Argentine Wine Consultant, Sebastian Koncurat. As you would suspect, there are many noteworthy selections of Argentine wine, available by the glass, carafe or bottle; but not to be missed is their Sangria de la Casa.

As you enter the space, you’ll be welcomed by an elegance and charm that invokes the Buenos Aires vibe. There are two full sides of French doors drenched with sunshine during the day. At night, the lights dim and the action begins with a mixed soundtrack of everything from classic rock and jazz to funk and soul. There is, of course, Argentine music sprinkled within the rotation.

The restaurant serves brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 11am-4:30pm, and offers happy hour Monday through Thursday from 4pm-7pm with table seating; and Friday through Sunday 4pm-7pm with bar seating. On Monday evenings from 5:30-11pm there is a BYOB option, with no corkage fee!

To sum it up, Balvanera is an excellent choice for a night out in Manhattan. From the tapas style starter plates of octopus, anchovies and savory pastries to the main plates of grass-fed beef, pasta and fish, you’ll enjoy a fabulous evening of quality wines and attentive service for a meal to remember.
